Raja Ampat is a remote archipelago off of West Papua. When planning a trip to this incredible area you’ll want to make sure you have enough time to travel between islands and explore all the most stunning areas. Whether you’re a diver or not, you won’t want to make your trip too short because there are amazing sights to see in Raja Ampat. Arriving in Raja Ampat Most visitors to Raja Ampat fly into Sorong on the island of West Papua and get a boat out to the islands from there. From Sorong to Papua Paradise Eco Resort is about 2 hours by boat. The resort’s boat leaves for Papua Paradise at 2pm, so if you arrive early in the morning Papua Paradise will arrange transport to a hotel, breakfast and then transport to the port for the trip to the resort. If you arrive after 2pm, Papua Paradise will arrange transport from the airport to a hotel in Sorong for a night and then to the boat to Papua Paradise the next day. Sorong is a small port city, but has some beautiful beaches, waterfalls and nature spots very close by that you can visit while you’re there. How Many Days Will I Need at the Resort? How many days you book at Papua Paradise Eco Resort depends on what you plan to do. The resort has a minimum stay of 3 nights and divers will want at least this amount of time to ensure they get to see the diversity and beauty of marine life in Raja Ampat. Day trips to the Fam Islands and Passage as well as Batanta are must do’s while you’re staying at Papua Paradise. If you are booking a scuba diving course with Gangga Divers you’ll need to check how many days your course is. Divers will also need to allow 24 hours of no diving before they fly according to PADI best practices. There are also fantastic places to explore on land, with half-day trips to Arifi village, waterfalls and early morning hikes to see the endemic birds of paradise. The boats to Sorong leave between 6am and 9am depending on the guest with the earliest flight, so keep in mind it isn’t possible to take one of these trips and leave the same day for Sorong. With 3 days for diving and a couple for exploring, you’ll want to book at least 5 nights. If you want to have some downtime as well, 7 days is ever better! Down-Time Don’t try to cram everything in while you’re in Raja Ampat. You might want to stop and look around and allow yourself some time to just soak in the sights and sounds. Raja Ampat is unlike anywhere else in the world and Papua Paradise Eco Resort is a very special place to stay. Also allow yourself time for your body to recover if you’re diving. You might not realize it while you are underwater, but diving is like resistance training and you might be sore, especially if you are diving multiple times a day. A visit to the spa, some sunbathing and a good meal are all ways you can relax and recover from diving. And again, don’t forget your last dive should be no less than 24 hours before you fly. You can choose to spend this time at Papua Paradise or return to Sorong for a day before your flight. Getting the Timing of Your Raja Ampat Trip Right It takes a little planning to make sure your timing is right on a trip to Raja Ampat, but we promise it’s absolutely worth it! The owner, Leonardo Seran Leo offered us packages and we decided to go with their CAD $1700 4D3N trip includes trip to Wayag, Piaynemo, Kaliburu and Mayalibit with full onboard meals and 2 diving trips for two person. He sent us itinerary and we paid down-payment in January 2023 and he asked for advance final payment a month before the agreement in April 2023 so we did. Then red flags start to appear when we got there. Schedule changes, homestay different from itinerary, lots of wasted time waiting at homestay doing nothing. They promised us snorkeling behind the island and suddenly no boat so they asked us to do it infront of the homestay instead. Then they took us to Wayag in the morning with a tiny fisherman boat almost 4 hours trip one way and then we're supposed to go to Piaynemo at noon but they made us wait to do nothing for hours until they bring us back to homestay and left us there. On the next day which was our final day with them, they promised us to go to Piaynemo in the morning at 7 and diving boat supposed to come to pick us up for two diving sessions. We waited for two hours and they said change of plan we go to Piaynemo with the fisherman boat and afterwards we will meet the diving boat there. At that point we're worried because we promised to meet another resort at 1 PM after we confirmed with Leo what time we can be dropped off at Waisai, that was in January. When we arrived in Piaynemo, there was no diving boat. They took us to a lagoon near Piaynemo, where they said it's where the dive operator is. We don't see any diving boat there, no red strip logo as signage that it's a dive centre, but we met a "dive guide" with equipments. Another red flag, the "dive guide" didn't ask for our diving licence or any briefing, he just asked for our wet suit and fins sizes, etc. Then, we put on our wet suit while tanks were already loaded onto the same tiny fisherman boat we came with. Suddenly trip operator told us diving is cancelled because the boat drivers don't wanna go. The meal they served was just tons of white rice, tiny bit of fried noodle and one piece of fried egg. That was for two days in a row and that's not right with the price we paid for since the other resort gave us full meal with multiple options including dessert. They offered us refund for the diving fees which was $365 but we ask Leo the owner of Raja Ampat Budget Trip for a refund of $500 so we can booked our last minute dive with our next resort. Leo agreed for that amount and will refund us immediately, that was May 15. It's May 19 and he still haven't transferred the full refund we agreed for, even after multiple contacts. His excuse was no signal in Papua but he managed to upload multiple pics and videos on his Raja Ampat Budget Trip Instagram account IG/rajaampatbudgettrip one day earlier. We tried to call him but he didn't answer. We kept the receipt of payment and itinerary but the conversations happened through WhatsApp. We did ask for email but he said signal is not too strong for email so use WhatsApp for everything. The crew was absolutely excellent. The food was OK/good. I know seasons are different, I dived last two weeks of November, but we saw no Mantas and very few sharks. I had the opportunity to do my DIVE MASTER course in the best dive sites in the world. Not only do you dive, but they also take you to see the different islands of the region, visiting different villages of indigenous people and visiting viewpoints that look like a postcard. The place is a paradise for those who are looking for nature in its most untouched state. The marine biodiversity on Raja Ampat is incredible, in fact just around the island of Arborek alone you can see an infinite number of different species and even things you would never have imagined. We saw a variety of schooling fish, barracudas, black-tipped reef sharks, a stingray, the unique wobbegong, and beautiful corals. While we went scuba diving, our 7- and 9-year-old kids snorkeled above us and were able to several sea turtles, batfish, and even dolphins! You take a long motorboat, hiked along the river bed and through the water, and then cut through the jungle. You could hear all types of birds and the famous bird of paradise while hiking. We even saw a small snake in the jungle. We brought a lunch and spent a few hours here. The water is cold and very refreshing! We met the local kids while eating ice cream, and then they showed us the cementary and beach area. A local elder invited us into his home for a tour and then we drank fresh coconut water grown in his yard. We saw the local school and the church. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming! Pulau Misool adalah salah satu dari empat pulau besar di Kepulauan Raja Ampat di Papua Barat. Pulau misool ini berbatasan langsung dengan Laut Seram.
